Bioko Biodiversity Protection Program

Richard Bergl

North Carolina Zoo

Bergl is a primatologist and conservationist who has been working in the Gulf of Guinea area for about ten years. His main interest is in how different technologies, such as genetics and geographic information systems, can be used to make conservation action more effective. He is working with BBPP to help develop a mobile computer-based data collection system. This system, based on the Cybertracker software package, will allow students, staff and volunteers working with BBPP to collect conservation-relevant data accurately, consistently and with GPS coordinates integrated with the observational data. The system will also speed analysis of data, allowing more rapid understanding of changes occurring in the forest.
